In the UK and Wales there are lots of organisations and charities that can offer support, advice or help to people with dementia and their carers. One of the best known dementia organisations in the UK is the Alzheimers Society. The Alzheimers Society is a non for profit organisation that offers help, support and information to dementia sufferers and their carers. One of the things that the charity does is that they run dementia friends training to individuals and businesses.
A dementia friend is someone who has been specially trained to help dementia sufferers to get through their illness with respect. They also learn how to talk to someone with dementia properly and how to spot the early signs of dementia. Everyone who completes the dementia friends training will be a accredited dementia friend or community. They get to wear a badge which shows they have been trained as a dementia friend. One of the businesses that is an accredited dementia community is Llanelli Indoor Market. Carmarthenshire Council has worked with the Alzheimers society Cymru to get all traders to spot the early signs of dementia and what to do. Most of the market traders are now dementia friends.
The Kidwelly Hub will be working with Kidwelly Town Council to make Kidwelly a dementia friendly town.
When ITV's Emmerdale was developing a storyline to raise awareness of dementia, they worked with the Alzheimer’s Society UK to make sure they were getting the story right. The storyline was very well portrayed through the acting of the cast involved. This ground-breaking storyline won praise from viewers and charities saying the show very bravely showed dementia in a positive light. The plot line won Best storyline at the 2017 soap awards.
